Billinghams’ new Photovest is made from a water resistant, plain weave textured nylon material. This was chosen over many other materials tested because of it’s light weight, is extremely durable, and at the same time is machine washable. Rather than traditional metal zippers, heavy-duty plastic coil zips are used because of their excellent reliability and long life, in addition to the fact that metal zippers are rather harsh on camera gear when worn around the neck. To further protect your gear, zippers are covered with a fabric strip, which prevents them from coming in contact with cameras’ LCD view screens.

Special attention has been taken to the positioning, size, and shape of the pockets on the Billingham vest. Four ( 4 ) extra roomy pockets are located just under the arm. These can comfortably accommodate long lenses ( up to 600mm ) and zip closed to prevent jostling. In addition, four ( 4 ) large pockets located on either side of the vest, where your hand would naturally come to rest can hold extra camera bodies. Many other well needed pockets, both with and without zips are located at important locations on the vest. These can carry passport, memory cards, flash, and any other items. Fully functional epaulets snap securely, while a slightly padded shawl collar gives protection in the field.

An interior snap, located about at mid-point of the vest allows it to be partially closed, when you don’t want to zip it closed completely, to aid in air circulation. Two mesh lined vents across the upper rear of the vest aid in air circulation.

Billinghams vest is cut a bit shorter than most. This design aids when walking or climbing might cause items to “ bounce “ off the wearers legs, a common problem with longer photo vests. Another key design feature is that both sides of the Billingham vest feature identical layouts to the pockets, inside and out. This helps with more even weight distribution and makes using it more intuitive…no more items getting lost in oddly placed pockets. The interior of the vest is fully lined in black nylon material.

HINT: Although Billingham sizing is fairly accurate, you may wish to consider purchasing your Billingham vest in a size LARGER than you might normally wear. This is because, as you truly utilize the vest for what is has been intended, that is, the carrying of a good amount of gear, the vest might “ snug-up “ and perhaps fit a bit tight. If you run on the “ smaller “ side of 42’ for example, stay with the 42. If, however, a 42 fits snug to begin with, then you may wish to consider a 44 Billingham vest.
